Today’s publication of the Ockenden Report into maternity services at Nottingham University Hospitals is utterly damning.

The finding that 162 deaths – 156 babies and 6 mothers – could have been prevented is devastating. 520 families suffered harm that should never have happened. We are deeply saddened to read it.

The recommendation that Martha’s Rule must be embedded across all maternity services is welcome and will undoubtedly help families feel heard and taken seriously when they raise concerns. But it should never have had to come to this.

SLOW is proud to have supported Martha’s parents through our peer-led groups, and we know first-hand the courage and determination of this family. That Martha’s death has led to change that will protect other families is something we hold with enormous respect.
