On day 3 of #nationalgriefawarenessweek we want to #shinealight on adult bereaved siblings.

On one of the first episodes of @imacelebrity , @coleen_rooney spoke about the death of her sister Rosie who died aged 14, 12 years ago. She says ‘I kept it together for my mum and dad’, and ‘it’s hard to lose a child’. With the second comment, there was a slight hesitation, she said child and not sister/sibling. Sounding like, she’s putting her parents grief before her own, even 12 years on (we could be wrong of course).

There’s a reason bereaved siblings are known as ‘the forgotten grievers’ and this clip highlights it. Shushma Jain, one of SLOW’s bereaved sibling facilitators said, ‘Watching the episode, I could feel what Coleen Rooney was saying, as us siblings are made to feel that our grief is “not as important” as our parents because we are “only” the sibling”. Therefore we suppress the grief like Coleen has shown in the clip. However, we shouldn’t have to, as we are their sibling, and equally valid to grieve and be equally affected by their death. This, however is far from true. We share our past, present and future with our sibling - the only relationship that does this. It’s ok to grieve and be affected by our sibling dying. We are doing nothing wrong’.

On day 2 of #nationalgriefawarenessweek we want to #shinealight on our SLOWSibs.

For over 10 years, we’ve been offering creative workshops for younger bereaved siblings and we’re still always amazed at the thought, creativity, devotion and dedication that goes into whatever it is they are creating in memory of their brother or sister. In this workshop, it was working with paint pens and pebbles.

When a sibling dies it’s traumatic for all the family, our SLOWSibs workshops are a safe, non judgmental creative space that allow young bereaved sibling’s to process their grief in a non verbal and sensory-based way.

Huge thanks to @nicwilson_art SLOW’s Co-founder, for setting up SLOWSibs and giving these young people a place to connect with other bereaved siblings and the opportunity to express their grief in their own way ❤️

We wanted to shine a light on some of our brilliant runners from this years @royalparkshalf and say a massive thank you for all the effort and energy you put into both your fundraising and running for SLOW. Most of you were running for deeply personal reasons. It was emotional for us standing on the sidelines.

Collectively you raised over £31k, that’s a huge amount of money for a charity of our size and it allows us to continue to support bereaved parents and siblings at the most difficult times of their lives.

I know you’d rather not be in this spotlight and not running for SLOW but here we are. We want your special people to keep shining ✨

There are 16,000 runners that take place in the @r

There are 16,000 runners that take place in the @royalparkshalf, one of those runners is @margaretpaul52 Margaret’s daughter, Lakisha, created a video diary for her Mum, starting at signing up, the training along the way, and finishing last Sunday, the day of the race.

Behind every step of Margaret’s training was her why, and the reason she was running for SLOW. Margaret’s son, Kaelan died in 2022. Margaret attended support groups with other bereaved parents at SLOW soon after.

As Lakisha mentions in the video ‘the charity you signed up to run for, is a charity that walked and is still walking you through the darkest time in your life’, that’s what we do at SLOW, we don’t fix, we walk alongside you, at your pace and we let you be in your grief. And if and when you’re ready, we scream and shout your name really, really loudly when you go past us at the Royal Parks half marathon 😃

We’re so grateful to Margaret and all of our runners from this years event. They’ve raised a HUGE amount of money which means we can continue to support and walk alongside other bereaved parents and siblings. At the weekend we ran our ‘SLOWSibs Summer Herb

At the weekend we ran our ‘SLOWSibs Summer Herb Planters’ workshop, this was an opportunity for our young siblings to commemorate and remember their sibling who has died.

Terracotta pots turned into beautifully decorated and graffitied masterpieces with patterns and letters and colours and animals that meant something unique to each of our siblings.

The different herbs we used have different meanings, lavender for calm, rosemary for remembrance, mint for protection and basil for hope. And the planters were finished with a splash of colour using either snap dragons or marigolds.

We snacked on pizza and added our herbs. We also fed the chickens that we shared the garden with.

Thank you so much to our young sibs who shared special thoughts and memories with us. We absolutely loved seeing your decorated planters being created ❤️❤️

Special thanks to our volunteers Lisa and Pia. And big, big thanks to @nicwilson_art for creating the SLOWSibs space.

Father’s Day is another difficult day in the calendar year and such a reminder of living your life without your child in it.

To all the Dad’s finding today (and every other day) particularly hard. We’re thinking of you.

As Nick Cave beautifully wrote in one of his Red Hand Files earlier in the year, ‘Be kind and patient and gentle and merciful with one another. Stay close. Hold firm. Forgive. Grief prepares the way. Joy will in time find you. It is searching for you, in the impossible darkness, even now.’

The central London half marathon route takes in some of the capital’s world-famous landmarks, on closed roads and within four of London’s eight Royal Parks - Hyde Park, The Green Park, St James’s Park and Kensington Gardens.

You can either whizz or go as SLOWly as you like. We will pay your entry fee and we ask you to fundraise a minimum of £450. Your money will help continue to provide support for bereaved families after the death of a child in the family.

Our next monthly evening support group takes place tomorrow, Tuesday 14th May, 7-8.30pm (BST).

We have spaces available within the group. If you or anyone you know needs access to support after the death of a child. Please get in touch info@slowgroup.co.uk

SLOW supports parents of any aged child and in any circumstances in which their child died. At any time after the death, whether is days, months or years.

Our groups are led by expertly trained bereaved parents. We see you, we hear you, we feel you.
